Disability

Our First Encounter

2 February 2019

Youths from Dunman High School and Tanjong Katong Girls’ School met each other for the first time to explore the issue of disability together.

It began at Dignity Kitchen, Singapore’s first hawker training centre for people with disabilities (physical and intellectual) and the disadvantaged (social and mental). As delicious as the food tasted, what was more special, were that people who are differently-abled were sensitively matched to jointly run the food stalls, and in some instances kitchen equipment was retrofitted to enable them to perform independently. Only 5 out of every 100 with disability are employed and they hope to change that.

As the day progressed, resource panelist Dr Justin Lee shared about the disability sector in Singapore and these key questions were posed to the youth, followed by an honest discussion:

  • What is a Disability?
  • Do you think you have a Disability?
  • What are the challenges faced by people with Disability?
